Winterlude!

We checked out Winterlude over the weekend for the first time which was pretty fun. I had been talking about it since before we left Alberta and was most excited for the ice slides. Josh wanted to try maple syrup taffy on snow.
We parked near City Hall in Ottawa to see the ice sculptures and stage entertainment in Confederation Park. They were fairly impressive and we got to also try maple candy – it was stickier than I had imagined it would be, but very delicious! So much Canadiana seems to derive from the east so it’s interesting to experience firsthand the culture that seems to get exported most regularly. There was supposed to be a free shuttle running between the sites on the Ottawa and Gatineau sides of the river, but the Gatineau transit strike meant the buses weren’t running on the Quebec side so we walked part way down the Rideau Canal (we don’t have skates yet) and then down Mackenzie Ave, past the US Embassy, under Champlain’s gaze, and over the bridge to Jacques-Cartier where there was tubing, ziplining, snow maze, and, of course, the ice slides!
I was super nervous about the ice slides but (obviously) they were designed for families and small children and weren’t actually scary. We definitely waited in line to ride them repeatedly because they were so fun!
