Eggs!

Our chickens started laying – it’s been very eggciting!

We weren’t sure how long it would take before we would get eggs and had heard it might be up to six months. We also have no idea how old our chickens are. We have three laying hens we call Plucky, Clucky, and Robot, and a rooster named Deaner because his feathers look like a mullet and reminded me of Terry and Deaner from the movie FUBAR.

Laying is fairly sporadic right now and some of the eggs have been very small or slightly misshapen, but we expect the frequency and quality to become more regular as they settle into their surroundings. Plucky is quite small so she may have just started laying and we suspect Clucky is a bit older so she may be at the end of her laying days. I am perfectly happy to have her live out a good retirement here.

It has been empowering to expand our capacity to produce our own food (even if we’re technically stealing it from chickens). Last year we had a pretty successful backyard garden that yielded a surprising number of vegetables given its size and Josh caught some fish over the summer. This year we’ve already made maple syrup and are hopeful that we will be able to grow vegetables again and maybe even harvest some wild berries. We used these first eggs to make pancakes to eat with our homemade maple syrup for breakfast and dinner a few times.
